Located at different ends of the island, they reflect the two clans’ lifestyles and opposing views on luxury. The gameplay session also revealed other important locations in the game: the headquarters of the Sharps and the Streets. Available in enclosed areas, such as the Solar Hotel, this feature offers a wide variety of interactions and gameplay possibilities. It’s the perfect place to make friends or stoke rivalries! To further enhance the social experience, in Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown players can control their customized avatar as soon as they get out of their car. In the large open space, the best drivers are showcased and any activities available are displayed. Designed as a social hub, this majestic hall is primarily a place to meet, chat and gather with other players. After the guided tour of a suite, Alain Jarniou continued exploring the inside of the building with a stop at the hotel lobby. Built on the site of Victoria Park in the heart of Causeway Bay, the Solar Hotel is a 120-floor, 540-metre-high architectural marvel with a unique and futuristic design. The tour started at the Solar Hotel, created by the KT Racing team. The gameplay session also highlighted the game’s important social features, which allowed them to meet, use the integrated voice chat, and take part in missions and races together.ĭuring the show, the guests explored the different faces and diversity of Hong Kong Island, which has been recreated at 1:1 scale. The guests were lucky enough to get an exclusive hands-on demo of Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown and to give their first impressions. Alain Jarniou, creative director at KT Racing Camille Courtier, associate producer and Guillaume Guinet, lead game designer, were joined by other motorsport fans: sim racing content creators BlackPanthaa, Alex VII, and Alan Boiston from Team VVV. Here’s hoping Solar Crown is the former and not the latter.Vivian Hughes, a representative of Radiant, the mysterious organization behind the Solar Crown, welcomed some distinguished guests at TDU Connect. Of course, the next line was, “But when it doesn’t, it’s a wreck.” If it’s the right time of day with the sun setting on the horizon ahead, an open road at 150mph and Paul Van Dyke blasting through the in-car radio like Kevin and Perry going large, it’s a dreamy, unworldly sensation that could only be captured with all the variables firmly in place. “There are moments in Test Drive Unlimited 2 when everything snaps together perfectly and you get an all too rare, blissful, zen-like rush of pure joy. Looking back on the last game in the series, the 2011 title Test Drive Unlimited 2, we didn’t pin a score on it, but Alex did share some thoughts on the game: Better to wait until there’s something meaningful to show, even if it means you can’t feature a tentpole release in your summer showcase. I get that Test Drive Unlimited is geared to be a grand revival for a once very popular and pioneering racing game series, but I don’t think it really helps build any kind of anticipation for the game to keep trotting it out and have nothing representative to show. This should hopefully help them while polishing the game and optimising for the vastly more powerful newer generation of consoles. It wasn’t until May of this year that they confirmed that the game has been delayed until 2023, and that KT Racing cancelled the release for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. The lack of gameplay at this point is getting a bit tiresome, and leans into one of the worst trends within the games industry: announcing a game or project far too early. It’s now been two years since the first teaser trailer and announcement for Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown in 2020 with KT Racing returning in 2021 with a moody head to head’ video, and then a location reveal for the Hong Kong setting, but no gameplay, even with a 2022 release date still expected.
